Walkthrough
This page contains spoilers. Every chapter is hidden until you open it. Each one lists what to do, in order, and links to the quest guide that has the details.
This is one sensible order. The game lets you do a lot of it in any order, and the places where it does not are noted. Nothing here depends on luck, but many fights do depend on your level, so gain a few levels whenever a fight looks too hard.
Chapter 1: Meadow
- Talk to everyone in Meadow, and hear the legend of the medallion from the tavernkeeper.
- Gain levels on the monsters around town until you are at least level 3.
- Follow the trail of the lost key and have the bridge rebuilt.
Details: Rebuilding the Bridge. Until the bridge is done you cannot leave the small area around Meadow.
Chapter 2: Quinine Tower
- Cross the bridge and go to Quinine Tower. Buy better equipment there and in Meadow; see Shops.
- Speak to Lord Ithis, then go into the mountain tunnel and find General Ryldar. He heals you as often as you like.
- Defeat the demon spider. Medallion piece 1.
Details: The Demon Spider.
Chapter 3: Getting ready
The rest of the story is built on two things you should get before anything else: money and spells.
- To enter the Floating City you must know the spell Acid Rain, and spells can only be bought in order. See Spells for where each is sold.
- Acid Rain is sold only in Rhoeyce. Rhoeyce is also where the free ferry to Aaryak leaves.
- Save 50 gold for a ferry, and 100 gold to spend in the goblin stronghold.
- The Travel spell (sold in the Floating City) later saves a great deal of walking.
Visit every town while you are at it: Towns.
Chapter 4: Amber and Laendlich
- In Amber, talk to the wise man. He tells you about the horn.
- Go to the ferryman’s hut on the south coast and pay 50 gold to be taken to Laendlich. Talk to the dwarf.
- While you are there, visit the dungeon and touch the ice at the end of the first map. You do not need to get any further yet.
- Take the free ferry back.
Details: The Hidden City of the Dwarves and The Firewand (step 1). Doing these in order matters: the dwarf only helps after the wise man, and the wizard in Tristen only cares about the ice after you have seen it.
Chapter 5: The Northern Post
- Go to the Northern Post and talk to Bonebreaker. Rest at the inn.
- Talk to him again and fight off the five goblins in a row.
- Talk to him one more time to learn where the caves are.
Details: The Hidden City of the Dwarves (step 3). Go into the fights with full HP and MP.
Chapter 6: Tristen and the Floating City
- In Tristen, talk to Mizrak the Wizard about the ice.
- Go to Rhoeyce, take the ferry to Aaryak, and go to the Tower of Ascent. Enter the Floating City.
- Talk to the Head of Council to get Mizrak allowed back.
- Read the purple books in the library and remember the name Einsiedler.
- Go back to Tristen and tell Mizrak, then return to the Floating City and meet him in his lab (the northwest corner).
Details: The Firewand (steps 2 to 5) and The Dwarven Crystal (step 6).
Chapter 7: The south coast
- Go to the south coast, blow the horn, and walk into the Dwarven Caves and the dwarves’ city.
- Talk to the king and promise to help.
- Go down the stairs and through the lettered caves to the portal.
- Return to the king.
Details: The Dwarven Crystal (steps 1 to 3). The cave stairs are a puzzle; see Dungeons and Caves for the full stair list.
Chapter 8: Trok and the west
- In Trok, talk to the scientist about the crystal.
- Go into the Crystal Mountains and through the stairs to the hermit.
- Tell him his name, Einsiedler, and take the Diamant.
- Take it to the scientist, then to the dwarves’ king. Medallion piece 2.
Details: The Dwarven Crystal (steps 4 to 8).
Chapter 9: Castle Garrison, Aaryak, and the Temple
- In Castle Garrison, talk to the gardener for a branch of ironwood, then give it to Mizrak.
- In Aaryak, ask the Miners’ Guild about sulfur.
- Sneak into the Dark Goblin Stronghold and rescue Gawain.
- Collect the sulfur in Aaryak, and have Mizrak make the firewand.
- Take the wand to the priest in the Temple for a blessing.
- Return to the Laendlich Dungeon, melt the ice, and go down to the bottom. Medallion piece 3.
Details: The Firewand (steps 5 to 10) and Rescuing Gawain.
Chapter 10: The far west
Gawain’s note tells you where the Magic Sword is buried, in a forest at the foot of a mountain in the far west. It is the strongest weapon in the game, so take it before the last fights.
Details: The Magic Sword.
Chapter 11: Wisp and the east
Prepare first. After the altar there is no going back.
- Have the medallion mended by the jeweler in Wisp.
- Go to the Rift Cave in the east and down through its three maps.
- Place the medallion on the altar.
- Fight three Black Dragons in a row, with no running.
Details: Mending the Medallion.
