Arenas

There are four arenas in Engel, each with several pits, and each pit pits you against opponents of one level. Pay to fight a tier well above your party for a lot of experience at some risk, or one well below it to try out new skills, spells, weapons, and armor without fear of losing.

How the arenas work

  • Starting a fight. An arena master stands beside each pit’s chest and tells you its level and fee. Put the fee in the chest to start the fight. You cannot run from an arena fight.
  • Your opponents. Each fight is against 4 to 6 opponents, all at the tier’s level, drawn at random.
  • Winnings. Winning pays the gold every opponent was carrying. On average that is a little more than the fee (the “Average winnings” column), so the arenas tend to pay for themselves, but a fight against a small group can still leave you out of pocket.
  • The Gold Varmint. About one opponent in a hundred is a Gold Varmint, worth the tier’s prize in gold. With 4 to 6 opponents a fight, you will meet one roughly once every twenty fights.
  • Experience. A tier is an even match for a party at about three times its level: the Level 4 pit suits a party around level 12. Fight above that and each win is worth more experience, up to several times as much. Fight below it and each win is worth less, down to a tenth as much for a tier far beneath you.

Levels 1–3

South-west of Tristen, and north-west of Hans-Dirk's Keep, whose people point the way. Three pits sit together in a courtyard, ringed by the inn, shops, and trainers.

Best for a party of about level 3 to 9. Also here: an inn (60 gold a night), Luma's magic shop, Nadine's magic shop, Osmond's equipment shop, Ruger's equipment shop, strength training (80 gold), intelligence training (80 gold).

The prison pit

While the party is held in The Rein’s prison, on the way through Escaping The Rein, Trivan runs fights in a pit beside Dex for 50 gold each. They are against 4–6 guards, acolytes, and bandits of level 2 to 3, there is no Gold Varmint, and a fight pays about 191 gold.

Dex’s own arena, where the party is made to fight in Dex’s Arena, is part of the story and charges no fee.
