The Demon Spider

Spoilers. Each step says what you are trying to do, and the solution stays hidden until you click it. To talk to someone, stand right beside them (not diagonally) and press Enter or Space.

Where: Quinine Tower and the mountain tunnel. Reward: the first medallion piece. You need: the bridge built (see Rebuilding the Bridge). The demon spider has 130 HP, so bring a hero who can take a beating; the tunnel is full of Giant Spiders too.

Meet Lord Ithis

The lord of Quinine Tower has a problem that weighs on him. He is upstairs.

Solution

Cross the bridge and walk west to Quinine Tower. The ground floor is only the entrance: take the stairs up to the upper floor. Lord Ithis is in the throne room there; his advisor and a guard are close by.

Offer your help

Lord Ithis wants the tunnel through the mountain finished, but a monster stands in the way.

Solution

Let him tell you the whole story. Choose Perhaps I can help you., listen, and then choose I will help you. If you back out, just talk to him again. Afterward he tells you to meet General Ryldar in the tunnel.

Go into the tunnel

Find the way into the mountain.

Solution

Two openings sit close together in the mountains near the tower, and only one leads to the spider. Use the eastern entrance, the one marked below. (The other opening, three tiles to the west, does not lead to the spider.) Inside, you fight Giant Spiders as you walk. The tunnel is a maze; the Dungeons and Caves page has its map.

Find General Ryldar

Somewhere in the tunnel is the general who leads the soldiers.

Solution

Fallen soldiers lie along the way, and some of them have something to say. Follow the tunnel to its southwest corner. General Ryldar is standing there, and the spider is just south of him. Each time you talk to him he fully restores your HP and MP, so use him as often as you like before the fight.

Defeat the demon spider

Kill the monster and take what it guards.

Solution

Step up to the spider and fight it. You can run (a 50% chance each try, and a failed try gives the spider a free hit). If you get away, go back to Ryldar, heal, and try again. When it falls, you find a piece of Greyor’s medallion, and you are back in the tunnel. Check that Medallion Pieces on the status screen has gone up. Stronger spells help; see Spells.

Tell Lord Ithis (optional)

The lord will want to know it is over.

Solution

Go back to Quinine Tower and speak to Lord Ithis. He thanks you and tells you to keep the medallion piece. That also opens the finished tunnel, which is a shortcut through the mountains. You do not need to do this to continue the game.
