The Dwarven Crystal

Spoilers. Each step says what you are trying to do, and the solution stays hidden until you click it. To talk to someone, stand right beside them (not diagonally) and press Enter or Space.

Where: the Dwarf City, Trok, the Crystal Mountains, and the Floating City. Reward: the second medallion piece. You need: to be in the dwarves’ city (see The Hidden City of the Dwarves), and later the spell Acid Rain to enter the Floating City.

This is the longest quest chain in the game. The steps must be done in this order.

Speak with the dwarves' king

The dwarves stole a piece of the medallion, and their king will not hand it over for nothing.

Solution

The king is in the great hall. Let him say his piece to the end. He sends you away, but you get to answer him: choose Wait! I will stop the creatures. He promises the medallion piece if you end the perils in the caves, but it is sealed in a crystal that even his best warriors cannot break.

Close the portal below

Creatures keep pouring into the caves from somewhere deep below the city.

Solution

The source is a portal in the last of the lettered caves, Dwarven Caves E. The caves down there are confusing, and some stairs send you back the way you came. You can only go down before the portal has been closed.

Take the stairs down from the Dwarf City. You arrive in Dwarven Caves 2; walk east and take its down stairs to Dwarven Caves A. From there, take the numbered stairs in order on the next three maps. The numbers carry on from map to map.

You are now in Dwarven Caves E. Stand next to the portal and press Enter: you smash the gemstones and the portal closes. The way out is E’s staircase up, which returns you to the Dwarf City. Skeletons and Trolls attack in the deep caves, so heal before you go. The Dungeons and Caves page shows what every other stair does.

Return to the king

The creatures are gone, but the crystal is still unbroken.

Solution

Talk to the king again. He thanks you and keeps his bargain: the medallion piece is yours once you can free it. He tells you to come back when you have a way to break the crystal. You can no longer go down the stairs to the deep caves, and there is no reason to.

Find someone who can break the crystal

A scientist supports his work with lenses. He might know how to focus enough power.

Solution

The scientist works with lenses and starlight in the observatory in Trok, one of the western towns. Talk to him about the crystal. He says that a lens made from Diamant could focus sunlight enough to break it, and that Diamant is rumored to be in the Crystal Mountains.

Climb through the Crystal Mountains

The Crystal Mountains are a maze of stairs, and most of them lead nowhere useful.

Solution

The entrance is on the southern coast, and it will not open for you until the king has sent you off to find a way. Every staircase on the first level moves you around on that same level, and only one chain of them gets you out.

Arriving on Crystal Mountains 2, take its stairs up to Crystal Mountains 3. A hermit lives there. The Dungeons and Caves page lists what every other staircase does.

Answer the hermit's riddle

The hermit knows where the Diamant is. He will tell you, but only if you can name him.

Solution

Talk to the hermit and listen to his story. Talk to him a second time: he says he will reveal the Diamant if you tell him his name, and a box lets you type it. The name is Einsiedler (capitals do not matter). It is written in the purple books in the Floating City’s library, in “Proof of the Existence of Diamant,” a book by the man who first wrote about the Diamant. The white wizard in the city also tells you to visit the Great Library.

To be let into the Floating City you need every spell up to Acid Rain, which means paying for all seven in order; see Spells. The Tower of Ascent, your way into the city, is on the eastern island. You reach that island by the free ferry from Rhoeyce to Aaryak. Read the purple books (marked below), then go back to the hermit and type the name. You can leave and come back: once you have heard his story, he asks the riddle each time you talk to him. A wrong answer changes nothing, so you can just try again.

Have the Diamant made into a lens

The hermit gave you a rare crystal. The scientist knows how to use it.

Solution

Take the Diamant to the scientist in Trok. He shapes it into a lens and mounts it on a device. He warns you it is even stronger than he expected.

Break the crystal

Bring the device back to the dwarves.

Solution

The device is useless anywhere else; the crystal is in the dwarves’ city. Return to the Dwarven Caves (the horn still works; see The Hidden City of the Dwarves) and take the stairs down into the Dwarf City. Show the device to the king. He has the crystal taken to a hall with a skylight, and the two of you shatter it. He gives you the second medallion piece, lets you keep the horn, and says you are welcome to return.

When you hold all three pieces, go to Mending the Medallion.
