Rescuing Gawain

Spoilers. Each step says what you are trying to do, and the solution stays hidden until you click it. To talk to someone, stand right beside them (not diagonally) and press Enter or Space.

Where: Aaryak and the Dark Goblin Stronghold. Reward: sulfur for the firewand, and the location of the Magic Sword. You need: to be at this point of The Firewand (Mizrak has asked for sulfur), and 100 gold to spend.

The goblins here hit hard: a Dark Goblin has 200 HP. Fights inside the stronghold are rare, but do not linger.

Hear about the captain

The Miners’ Guild cannot mine sulfur, because their guard captain is a prisoner.

Solution

Talk to the man at the Miners’ Guild in Aaryak. He explains that dark goblins captured the captain, Gawain, and that the guards will not go to the mines without him. He suggests sneaking into the goblin stronghold at night. This only works after Mizrak has told you he needs sulfur.

Sneak into the stronghold

The goblins’ fort is on the same island as Aaryak. It will not let you in until you have a reason.

Solution

The fort is south of the Tower of Ascent, near the coast, at the marked spot. Once you have heard about Gawain, you slip in after dark and arrive at the south gate, marked below. Before that, you decide not to go in.

Make a deal with the guard

One goblin holds the key to the cell, and he is hungry.

Solution

The guard stands by the great hall in the north. Talk to him. He will give you the key if you bring him dinner, and someone else has to cook it.

Ask the cook for dinner

The cook refuses to feed the guard because of an old grudge.

Solution

The cook is in the kitchen in the southeast. Talk to him. He will not cook for the guard, because the guard is in Glarg’s patrol and Glarg killed the cook’s servants. He wants Glarg’s necklace.

Find out who has the necklace

Glarg lost his necklace, and someone else has it.

Solution

Glarg is in the southwest. Talk to him: he says he lost his necklace gambling with Thrash.

Buy the necklace

Thrash won the necklace, and he wants something for it.

Solution

Thrash is in the middle of the fort. He sells things for gold, and he will sell it back for 100 gold. You must have the gold with you; if you do not, come back with it.

Take the necklace to the cook

The cook will cook once he has what he asked for.

Solution

Go back to the cook and talk to him again. He takes the necklace and makes the guard’s dinner.

Trade the meal for the key

Take the meal to the guard.

Solution

Talk to the guard again: he trades you the key for the meal.

Free Gawain

The key opens the cell.

Solution

Go to the cells in the northwest. Stand in the corridor between the two doors on the bottom row, at the marked spot, and talk to Gawain. You escape together and hurry back to Aaryak in the dark. Only the doors on this row work; the top pair is empty.

Collect your thanks

The Guild Master will reward you in the morning.

Solution

Talk to the man at the Miners’ Guild again. He gives you the sulfur for free, and Gawain has left a note that tells you where to find the Magic Sword. Now take the sulfur back to Mizrak in the firewand quest.
