A WARNING TO THOSE WHO HAVE NOT YET PLAYED BOTH GAMES:
THIS THREAD CONTAINS SPOILERS. QUIT READING THE FORUMS, AND PLAY THE GAMES ALREADY!

Since I'm finalizing details of the major plot points (locations, etc.), I'm starting this thread (here because it doesn't fit a specific game) to discuss the "official" history. In order of most authoritative to least, I will consider:
  • Definitive game material (plot and descriptions, maps, etc.)
  • DarkAges's comments
  • Possibly-incorrect game material (quotes from game characters, etc.)
  • Everything else

My first question: Greyor divided the world into two continents, though the medallion split into three pieces. Accounting for some shift during the rejoining of the medallion, 500 years of time, and the unclear extent of damage from the Catastrophe, the map from DAI matches well with DAII. If we assume that the player couldn't reach Greyor's continent (since it's described that Greyor's continent approaches swiftly, yet takes a few hours to join), where did Greyor's continent go?
I am thinking:
  • Brightblade's island was originally a part of the main continent, roughly the region containing the dwarf caves. When it separated, it took that whole mountain range with it.
  • Laendlich became overrun with pirates.
  • It seems the waters have receded: there is farmland south of the mountains which held/hold the dwarf caves, and mineral deposits on an otherwise flat island (Maenig's keep). I'm not a geologist, but I think this is consistent with islands rising from the sea. Please correct me if i'm wrong.
  • This leaves only Yanthenar, which is pretty small and well-developed to be Greyor's continent. It could be, but with the complete destruction of Greyor's castle, and the fact that it would have such a terrible reputation, I doubt it could develop into such a large city.

If these assumptions are correct, did Greyor's continent just disappear? Or is it just not accessible anymore?

It could be off the DAII map, perhaps to the northeast. This makes sense, as far as the timeline is concerned: the DAI ending says the Hero passes out, wakes up, escapes the Rift cave, returns to Northern Post for supplies, then fights Greyor before General Ryldar can reach the continent (Ryldar is from Quinine Tower).

Another possibility, extending my theory of the continent being in the northeast, is that Maenig's keep is the remains of Greyor's continent. It's a fair size, and has a good amount of disturbed souls. The problem with this is that there is little else there, unless the temple on the island is what's left of Greyor's castle. The DAI ending says the castle was in the distance after "crossing to Greyor's side", so Maenig didn't just rebuild the castle. His keep is too close to the islands's edge.

Those are what I'm considering so far. Does anyone have any more evidence as to the real location of Greyor's castle? I haven't thoroughly examined the dialogue from DAII yet,  but I don't recall anything. For the plot of DAIII, it'd be great to have a nice big chunk of unexplored land, but I want everything to be consistent.I have alternative ways to get the plot I want, but I'd prefer not to have to mess with it too much.

Thank you Mike. I've finally read through the DA2 Companion, and transcribed points of interest to the DA3 plot. Some parts match VERY well, and it eliminates the land restrictions I was worried about. Although, I did find a small inconsistency, easily accounted for by human error (NPC error?): The barkeep in DAI says the legend of the breaking is over a thousand years old, yet the timeland says Greyor was born only 319 years before the Hero.

I would still like to know about Greyor's continent, though. It could be of use.

Ack...I missed this thread. Better 11 months late than never...

Good find on the inconsistency. DA1 was written without much thought (heh). I just threw in a quick premise, made up a brief history with no details, and for some reason everyone seemed to attuned to it.

The DA2 companion is the real history. Although I should probably rewrite it for aesthetic purposes. Smiley

As noted elsewhere, it has potential for being an awesome world. Haste doesn't change it.

For the sake of canon then, lets assume that the barkeep is wrong, possibly as a result of misinformation spread by Greyor himself.

Or by the reality that bartenders aren't actually an accurate source of fact and history. Smiley

That too...

There's never been any mention of deities (or anything approaching deities), has there? Apart from Engel's association with life, of course...
